It is with regret that the Board of Directors of Ballymena RFC inform members of the passing of former Club Captain and Irish International, Jonathan Moffett.
Before joining the Club in 1955 Jonny played for Campbell College in four successive Schools’ Cup Finals, captaining their victorious team in his final year, when he was also captain of the successful Ulster Schools side.
Johnny quickly made his presence felt both on and off the pitch at Eaton Park, and was rewarded with two Irish Caps in 1961. In his first, against England at Lansdowne Road, by kicking two penalties and a conversion, Jonny was instrumental in Ireland beating England 11-8, their first victory over England in ten years.
As Club Captain the following year, Jonny led Ballymena in being the first club outside of Belfast, to win the Senior Cup in over 60 years.
Jonny emigrated to New Zealand in 1963 where he captained the Hastings Club and set up a highly successful orchard farm in Hawke’s Bay. Despite emigrating Jonny’s love of Ballymena RFC remained. On his last visit home, given his dedication to fitness and training as a player, he was delighted to play his part in supporting the refurbishment of our new club gym.
On behalf of everyone connected with Ballymena RFC could we extend our sincere condolences to his wife Christine, children Jonty, Joe, Sean and Kim, and to all who mourn Jonny’s passing.
