Welcome to Ballymena RFC @ Eaton Park – Est 1887

After more than two decades of extraordinary commitment and countless memories, club legends Andrew Ferguson and James Taggart have played their final game for Ballymena 1XV. The long-serving front row duo took to the field one last time yesterday in the Senior Shield Final against Clogher Valley, bringing to a close two remarkable careers that have spanned 21 seasons.

Both players began their senior journeys in 2004, stepping straight out of school into the demanding world of AIL Division 1 rugby. Since then, they’ve become synonymous with Ballymena RFC, establishing themselves as stalwarts of the club through promotions, Senior Cup victories, Ravenhill finals, and relentless AIL campaigns that took them the length and breadth of the country.

Between them, Ferguson and Taggart have racked up well over 150 AIL caps apiece and hundreds of appearances for the club at senior level. Over the years, they’ve pulled on the jersey for every adult team in the club, demonstrating not only their talent but their enduring love of the game and loyalty to the club.

Their longevity is made even more remarkable by the physical demands of their position. Playing in the front row for over two decades is a feat few can claim, particularly when they’ve done so across AIL Divisions 1, 1B, and 2A. More recently, their leadership and experience has seen them share the field with teammates who weren’t even born when their senior careers began — a true testament to their longevity.

This season, Taggy remained a regular presence for the 1XV, while Fergie’s involvement was unfortunately limited by injuries. Although they were unable to add another piece of silverware to the collection in yesterday’s final, their contributions to the club’s rich rugby history are beyond measure.

The club wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to both men for everything they’ve given — not just in terms of performances, but in their spirit, leadership, and undoubted commitment to the social side of the game.

While their time in the 1XV jersey has come to a close, we hope to still see them representing Ballymena in the years ahead at a lower level, where their experience and presence will continue to be an asset to teammates and to Ballymena RFC.
