The 4s welcomed CI 2s to eaton Park for some Wednesday night “Friday night lights”.
CI couldn’t field a front row so conceded the match points earlier this afternoon but were still keen for the run out.
The game was played at a high tempo from the start with both sides afforded great attacking platforms from the uncontested scrums. Ci struck 1st with a missed tackle in midfield and some nice offloads lead to a try. 0-7. After some stern words under the posts the 4s replied quickly with a well worked try of their own…some nice hands lead to Chrissy rea scoring in the corner 7-7.
Some loose hands and several knock-ons from both sides resulted in a scrappy 10mins with not much action until CI pounced on a loose ball and scored a breakaway. 7-14.
Ballymena’s forwards started to grow into the game which lead to some field position and territory. From a CI scrum a big hit in midfield lead to a turnover….from the ruck David O’Hara through a flat pass to the wing who beat 2 men before offloading to Mikey Smith who scored wide right. 12-14.
Ci started the 2nd half quickly and scored from the restart. 12-19.
In what was a back and forth game Ballymena won a penalty from the restart which was kicked deep into the 22….from the lineout maul the pack continued their dominance and after several pick and drives Mike Kerr scored. 19-19.
Ballymena continued to play for field position and from another penalty the pick and go game lead to a 4th try from captain Noel Smyth. 26-19.
With 10 mins to play CI got something of a 2nd wind and after a sustained period of pressure the CI pack forced their way over. 26-26.
This rejuvenated the 4s who worked their way into CIs 22 and where held up over the line although Chrissy Rea claims he scored!
Ballymena continued to press for the win and with the last play of the game, despite a clear offside in midfield, CI picked up a loose ball to run in from the halfway and win 26-33.
Thanks to CI for travelling despite the concession.
The 4s move on with a perfect 2/2 record and host Academy 2s on 12.10.24.
Tries: N Smyth, M Smith, M. Kerr, C Rea
