Those in attendance at Saturday’s pre-match lunch gathered to celebrate the official opening of Eaton Park’s two story extension, a project that marks a significant milestone in making the club more inclusive and accessible for all members. The extension, which includes a disability lift, accessible toilet facilities, a serving room, and a versatile multi-purpose room, is the latest in a series of improvements designed to benefit both sporting and non-sporting members of the community.
A key feature of the extension is the new disability lift, made possible by a £30,000 Access and Inclusion Grant from the Department of Communities. This funding, administered through Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, was previously only available for council-owned buildings, but in a welcome development, it was extended to community organisations like Eaton Park this year. The grant was instrumental in the installation of the lift, ensuring the club’s facilities are accessible to everyone.
As the project advanced, planning permission was secured with the support of former player and current sponsor, Norman McKernan of J.E. McKernan & Son. Norman’s expertise played a vital role in helping the club move forward with its extension plans, for which the club expressed heartfelt gratitude.
Another key contributor was Eamon Scullion, whose expertise as a Quantity Surveyor ensured the smooth management of the project, from procurement through to completion. His guidance was invaluable throughout the build, contributing to the project’s success.
The club also praised John McIntyre and his team of builders for their dedication and craftsmanship. The quality of the finished extension, reflecting attention to every detail, was noted as a testament to their work.
The event’s highlight saw Madam Mayor Beth Adger officially cutting the ribbon, signalling the extension’s readiness to serve the community. The new facilities align with the club’s long-term vision of becoming a vibrant hub, both for sports and wider community activities.
Recent improvements such as the upgraded bar roof, new windows, resurfaced car park, and renovated toilets and kitchen are all part of this larger strategy. These projects, while not directly related to on-pitch performance, have enhanced the overall experience for members and visitors.
Other recent developments, such as a newly equipped gym and inclusive changing rooms, further highlight the club’s commitment to its community. The changing rooms, which now feature individual cubicles and a dedicated physio room, are designed to accommodate both male and female players, enhancing accessibility and comfort for all.
A further grant of £50,000 from Mid and East Antrim Council, secured through the Grass Roots Programme, helped fund these vital renovations.
The club is looking forward to many more years of being a welcoming and inclusive space for all, thanks to the combined efforts of its supporters and the generous contributions from local government programs.
